Under any other normal circumstance, I’d agree that the term “feisty turtle” is an odd pairing of words.

But I can’t agree. I’ve looked after my neighbour’s turtle Harold (Harold!) on three separate occasions now and I think that has earned me the prestigious title of Turtle-Sitter Who Can Assign Adjectives To Local Reptiles Under Her Temporary Care, along with Observer of Curious Turtle Behaviour.

One night after feeding Harold, I decided to sit and watch for a while. I’d never actually watched turtles for an extended period of time — unlike most of the general population, obviously.

For one thing: Harold yawned and let me tell you, you really haven’t lived until you’ve seen a turtle yawn.

Imagine a turtle having just been woken from his hibernation. He’s been dug out from his underground haven with fresh soil still spattered across his shell and he’s slowly turning his head side-to-side, as if trying to make sense of his surroundings in his sleepy haze.

Then picture him raising his front foot to his mouth and yawning.

But that wasn’t the end.

The moment Grandma saw her sister moving on the computer screen, she let out an excited squeal.
On Christmas Eve, my genius cousin Kris arranged this surprise with extended family members to get Rosie on Skype, when it was Christmas morning on her side of the world.
Video chatting came naturally to both of them and my heart nearly burst as I watched how happy Grandma was to see her sister.
The whole family came downstairs to watch, snap pictures (as you can see my uncle doing in the background) and take our turns saying hi and Merry Christmas to Rosie.
Grandma threw her arms delightedly around Kris for making this happen and I couldn’t wipe the big silly grin off my face.
Old people using technology is cute, okay?

You know what’s cute?
When the neighbourhood husky peeks over his owner’s fence with a stubby paw on either side of his head and stares at all the passersby with an innocent curiosity that really, really makes me want to snatch him up and take him home with me when no one’s watching.

Uh, I’m just going to come out and say that this video gave me a major cutegasm. Excuse me while I watch it over and over…and over…

This video is called Fat Marmot Eats Graham Cracker. Its subhead reads, “He’s so fat he can’t do marmot things an ordinary marmot would do.”

I think I’ve had my cute fix for the night.

Leave it to Pixar to make me think about my childhood toys.

I’m not just talking about Toy Story 3 — even though the film touched on just about every thought and feeling I have about growing up and how I never want to grow up, and it turned me into a teary mess by the end.

I had the pleasure of attending a master class this past weekend taught by Pixar animator Andrew Gordon and story artist Matthew Luhn. And somehow, Matt managed to single me out from the dozens of students, asking me to come to the front of the class with two others to talk about our favourite childhood toy.

I had a few preferred playthings, so to pick one on the spot was difficult. Or so I thought. Then the smiling face of an old plushy, Taffy Tiger, swam to mind…and I couldn’t think of anything else but Taffy.

Matt had described earlier that one simple thought will trigger others and sure enough, that’s exactly what happened next: a rush of wonderful, happy memories flooded my mind and I found myself telling a room of strangers about one of my most cherished stuffed animals.

Matt asked where he was now and without missing a beat, I knew. I was still thinking about Taffy when I was finally permitted to escape back to my seat so I decided then and there to go on a mission. With photos, no less.

I was about to remark how much time has passed since anything barf-inducingly cute has been posted here. Then, with glee, I reminded myself about the recently shared video of the orangutan and the hound and realized the cute quotient needed to be upped.
This photo ought to fix that. I feel better now. (via cavaz)

I just about lost my mind when my buddy Will shared this Nat Geo clip, so much so that I’ve already seen it multiple times and decided that it also needed to be shared right here.

Please note that the orangutan is wearing a life jacket in several of these shots. AN ORANGUTAN-SIZED LIFE JACKET.

If this does cause any form of melting, then you clearly must have sold your soul for a measly $5.

If this was on Cute Overload—which it may very well be and I’ve somehow missed it—it would definitely fall under the Cute or Sad? category.
