Somehow my blog has turned into the family edition. Considering the posts I’ve planned for the near future, that’s not about to stop anytime soon, but I’m okay with that.
This photo of me and my cousins — minus one, who had left early — was snapped at Kris and Gino’s wedding in August by the amazing Claudia Hung. We’re all so rarely in the same place together since some of them live south of the border, so it makes me super happy this picture exists.
You get one guess and one guess only as to which one is my weird ex-Marine cousin and I’m willing to bet you knew before you read this.

More than 15 years (15! 1-5!) have gone by since I’ve gone on a road trip with my parents and brother, and I thought those days were long behind me. But this past weekend, we took a whirlwind weekend trip to Cleveland, OH, where my cousin Jenny became the second in the family to get married.

The trip was more than a little surreal when I realized that my brother and I spent most of the time in the front and behind the wheel while our parents took it easy in the backseat.

We spent much of the trip making Simpsons references, from imitating Homer’s scream when he tried to sneak fruits and veggies across the border — and then driving past Bort Road shortly thereafter (!!!) — to saying “Free shower curtain!” when we arrived at the hotel and wondering whether or not Free Willy would be on TV.

We’d burst into random spurts of laughter, making our parents laugh.

After the fact, Dad would say, “What are we laughing at?”

Mom replied, “I don’t know. They have their own inside jokes, we’re just laughing at them laughing.”

We stopped at a McDonald’s for a pee break — Mom always has to go…again, weird role reversal — and Dad bought a coffee. He was confused trying to figure out the newfangled coffee lid when my brother impatiently flipped up the flap.

Dad’s eyes lit up in fascination and he exclaimed, “Amazing!”

To which Andrew dryly responded, “What a time to be alive.”

More tales from Ohio to come, including strange pictures, bananas and polka dancing. Welcome (back) to my life.

My cousin Kristine and her love Gino have been together for 10 years and finally tied the knot this weekend. I was blessed to be the maid-of-honour, surprising myself — and our friends — by not bursting into tears every five seconds, especially during my speech.
There is so much more to say, but I’ll let this picture say it all for now.

My beautiful friend Catherine is getting married today in Cape Cod and I’m thrilled to be here to share this day with her and some of my closest friends. She and her fiancé were having trouble agreeing on a song for their first dance and when we had dinner together last month, I suggested dipping into the standards. Frustrated, she said they’d gone through a few of them, but Keith didn’t like any of the ones he’d heard.

“That’s because he hasn’t heard the right ones,” I insisted. “Let me play you a few of my favourites.”

So I loaded up some tracks, turned up the volume on my speakers and Cat listened. Slowly, a smile spread across her face when she heard a song that literally struck a chord with her.

Less than a week later, she sent an e-mail with the subject title “we got a song!” and the message: “thanks a whole bunch for playing those songs for me last weekend - keith and i finally picked “That’s all” by michael buble, thanks to you.”

I’ve always loved this song and was pleasantly surprised when I first heard the lovely arrangement for the Michael Buble version. Clearly it’s made an impression on the bride and groom too—they’ll be dancing to this song tonight and I’m so touched to have been a part of the process.

Congrats, Cat and Keith. These tears of joy are for you.
